Wow. This is one of the best, if not THE best, packed-full-of-amazing-choreo-and-dancing episodes SYTYCD has ever had.
Cyrus and Melanie dance jazz: Mandy Moore is in my top three most favorite choreographers, and this routine was great! It was so fun, it had a theme (the fist motion) and was just so… jazzy, I never feel like her choreo is as fusion as other dance routines, which I like. Actually, this reminds me a lot of the Boogie Shoes routine that Lauren and Billy danced in season 7 as well, because that one was also laid back and had a theme (the shoes/feet). Cyrus and Melanie weren’t completely in sync, their motions didn’t feel the same… but it was still good.
Chehon and Anya dance tango: OMG this was a gorgeous routine!!! And so well danced! I held my breath the whole time, it really was just effortless and flowed so well. The music was perfect. Wow. Speechless.
Cole and Allison dance contemporary: OK JUDGES ARE YOU SERIOUS?! YOU DIDN’T STAND FOR THIS?!!! This was epic. EPIC!!! Sonya Tayeh’s choreo is usually a hit or miss for me (mostly hits though!), but of course in some ways this is why she’s so great, and artistic. She pushes the envelope, and goes further than others when experimenting with new movement and expression. But then, because she’s so creative, the choreographies that really stand out from her pool are utterly brilliant. This was one of those standout choreographies. It was just superb. I really loved the ending hook of Allison’s elbow, and also the falling/rising in tandem sequence. And honestly, Cole did a really great job. Not only does he play the characters/moods of Sonya’s dances to the “T”, but he also completely held his own against Allison, who is, objectively, one of the most talented dancers to ever be on this show. Everything about this was spot on. The lift at 1:09 = beautiful.
Eliana and Ryan dance the quickstep: I don’t have a strong love for the quickstep, mainly because I find it less interesting and less boundary-pushable than other types of dance (coughCONTEMPORARYcough), but this was so well executed, elegantly danced and choreographed, I couldn’t help but watch it again. Eliana is proving her mettle over and over, she’s super solid. She actually reminds me of Melanie from last season, because they both were so talented, adaptable to different styles, mature, and effective users of facial expression and grandeur in movement. Ryan did an excellent job too, everything seemed picture-perfectly executed.
Lindsay and Alex dance jazz: Lindsay is my favorite from this season, and Alex is one of my favorites of all time, so I was very excited to see this! Yes, there was a lack of chemistry, but honestly that didn’t detract too much from this routine because this was another AMAZING ROUTINE by Sonya Tayeh! I just… gah this was so wonderful!!! (Random insert: Two other great routines of Sonya’s are Caitlynn and Marko dancing to “Heavy in Your Arms”, and Alex and Allison dancing to “Hallelujah”.)
Tiffany and Ade dance contemporary: Um, okay this is a BIG song to choreograph/dance to. Props, major props to Mandy Moore. And whoa, of course Ade’s strength is such a huge part of why this dance was so beautiful, the lifts were majestic and every move was so effortless… I loved the slow carry over of Tiffany over Ade’s body at the beginning. The flow of the dance was perfectly set with the music. (Sidenote: HAHA NIGEL QUOTED ONE DIRECTION.)
Will and Lauren dance lyrical hip hop: This idea was so creative! Very little interaction between partners, which usually detracts, but every motion was mirrored so beautifully so it really worked! Christopher Scott really impressed! And… I <3 Will ^^ I like his craziness so much, but for this piece, his containment of his normally HUGE motion really complimented the theme. And Lauren is so cute and just IN IT, as always :) I wish we were friends.
Witney and Twitch dance east coast hip hop: I was pleasantly surprised by Witney’s performance, it’s so hard to dance next to Twitch and do well, especially if you’re not Comfort (who obviously holds her own), and especially if you’re not a hip hop dancer. Slow clap for Witney, seriously. Slow because I’m so shocked. I can’t wait to see more from Luther Brown though, this was pretty impressive. I love that this was more foundational (like Mandy Moore’s choreo) rather than fusion hip hop (even though I love all kind of hip hop). I would definitely want to take a master class with him… and although I would fail miserably, at least I would’ve tried. :)
- I wish Mary Murphy would stop trying to use song titles as a springboard for her critiques/predictions. I also wish she would stop screaming.
- I wish Kat would stop pretend-reprimanding dancers for being/doing whatever his/her character/dance part was being/doing.
- Jesse Tyler Ferguson, you da best. Come be a judge again!
- I am happy I am from Utah (usually), but then I am REALLY proud of being from Utah whenever I watch this show. :)
